Maybe I’ve been getting ahead of myself. Some people have been wondering why I’m talking about art and education in the context of sustainability. “Isn’t sustainability all about the environment?” they’ve asked.

So here’s a definition worked out with my friends Jae and Bryan:

A Sustainable Community is a community of people who strive to manage their social, economic and environmental affairs in ways that minimise the impact of human beings on the planet. To achieve this, they re-evaluate methods of food production, water-management, education, business, design, energy production, transport, and much more, modifying them if necessary so that maximum value is obtained – not just in financial terms but also with regard to the environment and social benefit.
