In 2002, the Blue School in Somerset relaunched their school councils in order to include students more actively in the running of the school. The aim of this Learning to Lead project was to enable students to exercise leadership in tackling real problems and concerns in practical and transformative ways.

The school now has over 30 teams which all have responsibility for different areas – the Africa Link team, the fitness cuisine team, the beautiful school team, the aquarium team and the toilet team for example – and has been imitated in over 100 schools in the UK.

The approach has now been adapted to suit other organisations and institutions: youth clubs, homes for the elderly, prisons and hospices.
