Zipcar is the most successful car sharing scheme in the world (2012) – with over 11,000 shared vehicles, mostly in the States (but hundreds in London and three in Maidstone).
Members pay an annual fee of £55 and then book cars online or on the phone – by the hour (£5) or day (£49). Once booked, they use their zipcard to unlock the car.
Two advantages of car-sharing: it brings down motoring costs and reduces the number of cars on the roads.
How many residents in Wye would be interested in such a car-sharing scheme? Enough to request our very own village zipcar? Or should we start a scheme of our own?
